1993 Chevy Cavalier RS?

When the Cav is running and if I have it running in any gear and then put the car in reverse, the clutch or fly wheel (dont know which) ride really hard when the clutch and flywheel come together put after a 0.5 to 1 second, the Cavalier runs fine, until I put it in reverse. what is the deal and how do I fix it?
